NORTH TEXAS – Witchita Falls will take on #6 ranked team in OK…
Memorial Stadium was alive and kicking last THursday night with new season jitters
and offensive explosions. The Coyotes got their 2010 season off to a bang as they
returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. By the time the night had
finished, two players had set school records, and they walked up the hill with a
59-35 win over in-town rival Burkburnett.
Burkburnett was an option-based, finesse type team, tonight’s
opponent, Lawton MacArthur, almost mirrors Burkbernett exactly.
LMHS comes across the river for tonight’s game, and they are bringing their #6 state
ranking in Oklahoma with them. Both teams have seen each other in the
off-season. The Coyotes beat Lawton Mac in a 7-on-7 tournament earlier this
summer. According to the WFISD record book, this will be the first football
meeting between the two schools.
“We’ve seen their scrimmagees. They have some speed. They run the same system we
do. And, they have a good quarterback, and some good wide receivers,” Coyote
head coach Jayson Lavender said of tonight’s opponent.
Lawton Mac senior Dylan Warner passed for 1,872 yards and 24 touchdowns as the
Highlanders went 7-4 last season. His favorite target is expected to be
Rashaud Foreman, who had 15 catches for 227 yards last season.
For the Coyotes on offense, it starts with junior quarterback Dylan Sheffield.
He led the attack last week with a school-record 438 passaing yards, and a
school-record tying 6 touchdowns. He also set a school-record for completions
with 29. His main targets were wideouts Bubba Mathis and Devontay Chaffin, both
of whom finished with 100-yard games last week. Chaffin caught 8 passes, ans
turned four of them into scores.
Defensively, the Coyotes will lean on the steady play of Daulton Davidson, who
finished last week with eight tackles and two forced fumbles. Hunter Wood also
recorded nine tackles last week.
MacArthur was a high scoring team in their own right, as they scored 48 points
in their final two games before bowing out to eventual state champion Carl
Albert.
Game time is set for 7 PM at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
