The story, as it has been all year, was that of the impressive defensive backfield that Lancaster boasted under the direction of DB’s coach, Aaron Fletcher. Coach Fletcher has fast become renowned by college coaches as a producer of big time talent for the DFW area. When looking to fill a defensive back position, most college scouts will agree, that one of the first stops on the block is LHS. Tyler Stephenson (Baylor signee), Quentin Hayes (OU signee), Kendall Hayes (La Tech signee), Mathew Thomas (Iowa State signee) and Dion Criss (East Central Ok signee), are all defensive backs, were all offered scholarships and have all been developed under the tutelage of Coach Fletcher.

Tyler Stephenson (Baylor), Quentin Hayes (OU), Kendall Hayes (La Tech), Deon Criss (ECO), Darius Lively (ULM), Ronald Huckaby(W Tx A&M), all attended last years Dallas area Next Level Athlete Showcase.

For Lancaster High School’s Tyler Stephenson, making the right decision is paramount when it comes to choosing a college. Tyler, arguably one of the best cover corners in the country, has several of the Nations top football programs knocking on his door but isn’t too quick to pull the trigger. “Tyler is looking for the right environment where he will flourish both on and off the field,” said Stephenson’s defensive back coach, Aaron Fletcher. “The college that Tyler chooses will most likely be one that provides strong academics, a laid back atmosphere and an eclectic cultural experience, all of which are things that compliment Tyler’s personality.” Before Stephenson makes his final decision, he will most likely take all of his official visits to assure that he has absorbed each option and makes a well thought out decision. For a defensive back to possess the innate ability to cover in man as well as Tyler does is very rare and therefore choosing a college that allows him to do so will be an imperative. “In my experience, I have never seen a cover corner that has the natural ability that Tyler has, for Tyler to truly reach his upside potential it will be important that he play for a DB coach that recognizes this and a defensive scheme that compliments his attributes,” said Fletcher.
Tyler, also one of the Nations top track athletes, recently participated in meets in Puerto Rico and placed 2nd in the 110 hurdles at the Nike Outdoor competition in North Carolina. Stephenson’s track background may in-fact play a major role in his college choice. Tyler has recently expressed interest in the University of Oregon as they have both superb track and football programs. Oregon will most likely fall on Tyler’s official visit list along with the University of Arizona, University of Tennessee, Baylor University and LSU. At this point, the colleges that Tyler visits are completely speculative and may certainly change by the end of his senior year. It is; however, refreshing to see an athlete take his time when selecting a college. Many high school football players make decisions too early in the recruiting process due to the misnomer that they may get passed up. Making a decision under this type of pressure can often times lead to a choice that may not have been well considered. For Stephenson, this will certainly not be the case as he has taken a very patient and professional approach to the entire process.

Adam Dingwell verbally committed to San Diego State University. The 6’4” Rockwall QB, will fit in nicely in the wide open passing offense of San Diego State. First year head coach, Brady Hoke is intent on turning the SDSU program around after a 2-10 2008 season. In his six seasons at Ball State, Hoke compiled a record of 34-38 taking the Cardinals to bowl games in the 07 and 08 seasons. His final year was his best, finishing 12-1 and being named as the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year. Second year starter for Rockwall High, Dingwell will add his senior year to an already impressive junior campaign where he completed 124 of 201 pass attempts for 1,731 yards and 15 touchdowns, before heading off to the college ranks. San Diego State took interest in Adam after seeing his Next Level Athlete Showcase footage from both the Lancaster and Grand Prairie events where Dingwell also caught the eye of the NLA staff. Adam displayed great footwork, accuracy, and a strong arm to compliment his 6’4” frame. Adam has a bright future and will soon impress on Saturdays.

Quentin Hayes, from Lancaster High School in Lancaster, TX, announced that he will be attending the University of Oklahoma next fall. The 6 foot 175 pound, defensive back attended the 2009 Next Level Athlete – Blue Chip Showcase in Grand Prairie, TX on January 24th 2009. ”We were very impressed with many of the athletes at the Blue Chip Showcase however, Quentin was one of those athletes that really sparked our attention. We began receiving calls about Quentin almost immediately following the event,” said Justin Simons, President of Next Level Athlete. Along with Tyler Stephenson, Deon Criss and Kendall Hayes, the Lancaster secondary continues to be one of the most highly touted in the area. ”I think that one of the most commonly discussed topics related to the Lancaster secondary is how well coached these guys are. I have heard several times from college coaches how impressed they are with the overall fundamentals of these boys” said Simons. So who’s behind all of this success? Lancaster’s secondary coach, Aaron Fletcher. Although he won’t take the credit for all of the success of his defensive back core, it is certainly obvious that the consistency in fundamentals that each of his DB’s possess has it’s place of origin.
