WFHS vs The Colony
Here’s what one has to remember about tonight’s game at Memorial Stadium:
Everyone is in first place. That’s how the entire district of 4-4A looks right
now, and that’s the key stat that WFHS head coach Jayson Lavender keeps hitting
home with his team.
“Our district is wide oped,” Lavender said. “There is one team (Denton Ryan)
above everyone else, but other than that, everything is very comparable.”
The Coyotes lost last week 48-26 to Bishop Lynch. But, despite the loss,
Lavender said his team has seen the most improvement on the defensive line. He
named Gus Simpson, Hayden Wright, Jordan Neal, Tyler Reyna, Steven McMahon and
Morgan Pence as key contributors. Last week also saw the return of quarterback
Dylan Sheffield from a week 3 DNP. Sheffield’s timing was affected as he missed
his receivers on some wide open looks. Despite the layoff, his top two receivers
still managed to go over 100 yards apiece. They’ll need that type of play from
Diondre Singleton and Bubba Mathis again tonight.
The Colony opened their season with a 50-27 loss against Sherman, but has reeled
off three straight wins over McKinney, Frisco Centennial and North Dallas. The
Cougars are led by quarterback Garrett Simpson, who has thrown for 932 yards
this season with nine touchdowns. Simpson’s favorite target is Gerald Thomas,
who has 482 yards receiving and three touchdowns. THeir leading rusher is Nathan
Alvarez with 184 yards and two touchdowns.
This game should be interesting an many fronts. First, it is the district opener
for both schools. Second, it is expected to be a rainy night at Memorial
Stadium. THe Coyotes defeated The Colony last season in a series that has always
been close between the two schools. If the Coyotes can capitalize on some of the
things they discovered last week, they should win this one in a very close one.
